10 Mile Run

Getting prepped to run 10 miles by eating 1 cup of old fashioned oats w/ 1 Tbs raisins, 1 Tbs shredded coconut, 3 dried apricots topped with a 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt sweetened with raw honey and 1 boiled egg and 2 egg whites. This is my go to meal before any long run. What is your favorite?

Recap of Saturday

I did some things well and some things not so. I ran my 9 miles, indoors, on a treadmill because my babysitter canceled, but I got it done. I burned 1066 calories per my heart rate monitor. (For those of you who wonder how I burn so many cals/workout, please remember that the more you weigh the more you burn. Enough said.) I ate great for most of the day but not for dinner. I went to the bowling alley with my family. There were NO GOOD CHOICES in sight. So I chose to have chicken strips and onion rings. My totals for the day were ok for the most part except the fat and fiber counts. I am right back on it today though.

Why Are You Doing This?

That is the question that I was asked today. It was asked in true concern. It was asked by a friend that had just led a Bible study I was in about women and food and God. The study centered on doing God's will, leaning on Him and finding peace with food and your body. So her concern was for me and my walk with God. My initial response was because I wanted to compete about 10 years ago but didn't because I was afraid. As I pondered this question all day long, rolling it around in my head, praying for clarity, I kept asking myself is this true? Yes it was. I was afraid of what others would think of me back then. I was afraid of hard work. I was afraid of the time and energy I would need to expend to get to my goal. I was afraid........but I also hated my body back then. I hated they way I looked, hated all the fat I had, mind you at one point I had about 14% body fat then, I still saw my flaws not my assets. Things are different now. Am I afraid of what others think of me? Not really. I am I afraid of hard work? Not anymore. Am I afraid of the time and energy it will take? Maybe a little bit. But most of all do I hate my body any more? NOT ON YOUR LIFE. I love my body the way it is. I love that it carried me through 26.2 miles of the Marine Corps Marathon. I love that it gave me two wonderful children. I love every part of me. I am comfortable in my skin no matter what my size. I am at peace with it. So why am I going to do this............... because I can.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

How I'm Gonna Do It!

I am going to diet slowly down. I will be eating about 1500-1700 cals per day because I am trying to gain muscle while losing fat. My macros will be 40/30/30, Carbs, Protein, Fat percentages. I really need to start looking at the amount of protein I eat, I am not against meat or anything but if given a choice I would eat bread and pasta all the time. Well anyway, once I am down to within 10 pounds of my goal, which is going to take some time, I am then going to start a competition diet. They last anywhere from 8 to 20 weeks depending on what you are trying to achieve. The comp. diets are very hard on your body and are not meant to be eaten as your regular diet. The do not provide enough calories and restrict what you can eat so much but for 12 weeks it should be ok. I will go to a Nutritionist/Trainer for the Competition diet. I will also probably start working out with her at this time also.
As for workouts, right now I am training weights 3X/week. I lift really heavy when I train because my body responds to it so well. For cardio I am training for a ½ marathon in March. After this ½ I won’t do another long race until after my figure comp as all that running eats up muscle and is really hard my body. I will switch over to 1 hour slow and steady cardio 4X/week with 2 HIIT sessions 2X/week. Switching it up between running and spinning.
I am also going to do yoga for relaxation 2-3X/week. It is basically a huge stretching session but it helps with recovery. I am going to start getting deep tissue massages 2X/month to help with recovery and healing.
Supplements will be crucial during this process. Here is what I will be taking:

Pre-workout:
 1. N.O. Explode
 2. Glutamine
 3. BCAA
Post-workout (weights):
1. 1 Scoop Jay Robb protein powder
2. Glutamine
3. BCAA
Post-workout (cardio):
1. Glutamine
2. BCAA
3. B-complex vitamin
4. Vitamin C
5. Some high carb. food item such as a banana

Other things I plan on doing would be sure I get 1 gal of water/day, 8 hours of sleep/night and drink green tea with every meal and more throughout the day. I LOVE green tea! I am going to start to post daily about my workouts and food intake. I will eventually post pics but I am not ready yet. ;)

Here We go!

Here goes my first post for this blog about my journey to a fitness contest. I am a stay at home, Catholic, homeschooling mom of 2, a wife to the best, most supportive, but secretive man in the world, so he won't be mentioned very much here. I am 40 years old. I need to lose 60 pounds. I want to enter a figure competiton by 2013. I have a lot of work cut out for me but I am not afraid of a little hard work!
